When businesses start looking for a mobile enterprise messaging app, initially they often believe they might be able to use PC-based legacy solutions like Microsoft Lync (now called Skype for business), Cisco Jabber or IBM Connections Chat. Enterprises normally quickly find out during an evaluation that unified communication tools like Lync & Co. are not the right solution:
1. Focus on VOIP and Online Meeting Instead of Enterprise Messaging
The product strategy of Lync & Co. has always been focussed on online meeting and VOIP (in order to replace calling on landlines). Messaging has only been sub-feature in these apps, which is either hidden or mixed with other functions. This significantly limits the usability, completeness and speed of messaging with Lync & Co.
2. Weak Group Messaging
Professional group messaging is a core enterprise use case: Personal groups and pre-configured organizational groups (e.g. from LDAP) are important for one-click group messaging. New group chats must be easy to set up, define and manage on mobile devices. Read receipts are required for 1:1 chats and especially for every member of a group chat in order to enable an easy follow-up. All these features are non existent or rather weak in Lync & Co.
3. No Persistent and Synced Chats
Chats on all mobile, tablet and desktop apps must be persistent and synchronize immediately across all devices. Employees should be able to chat on the desktop PC and if they switch to the mobile device, all chats should be instantly up-to-date in order to seamlessly continue the conversation. 4. Limited Digital Content and File Sharing
Users nowadays expect advanced digital content sharing, which Lync & Co. struggle to fulfill. On the one hand users demand sending of multiple photos at once, exchanging calendar dates, sharing locations from a venues database and voice as well as video messaging. On the other hand businesses require integration into comprehensive enterprise file sharing solutions (e.g. Box, Sharepoint, Accellion, Acronis).
5. High Battery Drain on Mobile Devices
As we all know battery power supply on a mobile device is rather limited. It is very important to have an enterprise messaging app that minimizes the battery usage on a mobile device. Users often complain that Lync & Co. often require permanent server connections and quickly drain the battery of smartphones and tablets.
6. No Enterprise Ecosystem Integration and Limited APIs
In order to automate, accelerate and improve processes as well as workflows an integration of an enterprise messaging app into the IT ecosystem of an organization is very important. File sharing is one example here, but many more integrations are going to be needed to improve the productivity overall. Lync & Co. lack the required APIs and integration features.
7. No Mobile Application Security
Enterprise messages and content need to be secured on mobile devices. Thus, a business messaging app has to protect all enterprise data by integrating in leading EMM solutions and offering a mobile application security layer. Currently, Lync & Co. don't offer support for leading EMM solutions, and cannot secure data adequately in a mobile first world.
8. Cloud Roadmap Only with No On-Premise Future
The roadmap of Lync & Co. is focussed solely on the cloud. Businesses, who favor private cloud or on-premise deployments for an enterprise messaging app, require software, ecosystem and infrastructure integrations, which are not aligned with the plans and product strategy of Lync & Co.
